WCCA Suggestions
I suppose I'll start off with a post on the WCCAs, because I am still working on my Comic-Con posts. Also, I'm not going to talk about the winners so much, as about things that should have been different about the way it was run presented.
First off, let me just say, it is ridiculous that the front page remained un-updated for as long as it did. I have heard tell that there were technical problems, but I don't have much sympathy on that front. Either they could edit their front page, in which case they should have, or they couldn't, in which case they ought to have aquired a different domain name spread the word on where that was, and had a website they could update. Running this show out of the forums is just atrocious.
As of today, however, the ridiculousness is at a new level. The front page has updated. however, it still has up information announcing that the awards are almost here. So, someone was able to edit the page, and didn't think to delete the text that has been at least partially out of date since May 22nd. Things like that just distract from the hard work that went into this, and make it harder for people to feel positive/excited about the awards generally.
Ok, that's the end of my pointing out how ridiculous their site management is.
Here are some things that may or may not generally get done, but which, if they aren't done, I think should be.
Every nominee should be able to have listed, on the site where the nominations are announced/officially listed, links to a few sample strips/pages that they think is representative of their strength in the relevant category. If the nominees don't provide one, the links would just go to their main site. But, I imagine that if someone is nominated for best art, they may want people to see particular strips as evidence of their range, or the like, and similarly, if someone is nominated for best character development, they might have a particular arc they think would be good to read, or a particular character they'd want people to pay attention to. The only potential point of contention I can think of for something like this would be that the artist might showcase something distinct from what people had in mind when they nominated them, and I don't think that's a problem. One nominates the artists and their work, not merely some particular aspect of one feature of their work.
Another suggestion I have is to standardize certain elements of the awards presentation. Some of the presentations end with "and the winner is..." and others say the winner specifically. I imagine this is because some people weren't aware of the winner when they were creating their presentation strip. But its a bit odd nonetheless, and so it might be best to either request that the presentations be submitted with four possible final panels (one for each nominee) or all of them end before the announcement. Something of that sort.
I'd also like to echo Gillead, the Webcomicker's sentiment that outstanding comic should get removed from competition in the other categories. Or something of that sort, because it would make the awards more interesting.
I know that putting the awards together must have been a lot of hard work, and I appreciate and respect that. I really think its a shame, though, that the front page of the official site doesn't reflect that hard work.
